National minorities and the indigenous Sami people

National minorities and the indigenous Sami people are a great asset to Norrbotten and we want to support the area's language, culture, history and industries.

The culture of national minorities and the indigenous Sami people is an important, active and innovative part of the culture in Norrbotten. Sápmi is home to some of the region's most successful artists and cultural creators, and Tornedalen is brimming with commitment and development. The county has a significant Swedish-Finnish and Roma culture.

Region Norrbotten wants to strengthen the cultural infrastructure and find common strategies for the national minorities and the indigenous Sami people to continue to develop and be a strong part of Norrbotten's cultural life. There is a great need to collaborate and do things together to move the positions forward.

Cultural gathering activities for Tornedalen, Kvänen and Lantalaiset residents

"Many of us young people don't know that we belong to an ancient minority, yet we carry the inherited shame. That shame must be turned into pride."

The report begins with the words of cultural writer Mattias Timander POPPA - Cultural gathering activity for Tornedalen, Kvänen and Lantalaiset. It compiles the results of in-depth interviews and digital workshops, study visits and Town Hall meetings with the minority. Children and adults, politicians and cultural actors have spoken out. The Norden Norrbotten Association has carried out the project on behalf of Region Norrbotten.
