Industrial restructuring
The world is watching northern Sweden and the historic investments that are now being made to build businesses that enable sustainable development in several areas. For these establishments to succeed, major investments in infrastructure, housing, education and culture are also required. These investments must also be made in the short term with far-reaching consequences for the future and future generations.
The companies behind the major establishments are driven by both internal and external pressure to be world leaders in the climate-neutral transition. The establishments also involve industrial expansion in places that have long been characterized by declining populations and declining tax bases. Here, the investments create new dynamic conditions for development both through the establishment of the company itself and through the opportunities created for nearby and complementary activities.
All of this means that the municipalities' transition will be at least as extensive as that of industry. Broad collaboration between municipalities, regions, civil society, business, government and academia is a prerequisite for addressing the complex issues that sustainable development entails. Region Norrbotten contributes to collaboration and sustainable transition by actively working to develop existing and new platforms for collaboration and innovation, and by highlighting and monitoring holistic perspectives, goal conflicts and goal synergies.
