Energy system

The investments now taking place in Norrbotten contribute significantly to Sweden achieving its climate and environmental goals. Access to fossil-free energy is an important competitive advantage for players establishing themselves in the region. Production and distribution of green energy is therefore a prerequisite for this development.

The types of energy that are currently relevant for increased production of electricity are primarily wind power and solar energy. To solve the problem of an increased proportion of intermittent electricity production, investments are required that promote adaptable energy use. By developing and applying various forms of energy storage technology, fluctuations in the energy system can be reduced, redundancy strengthened and intermittent electrical energy can be converted into other types of energy.

Increased electricity production, however, will not be sufficient to create a stable energy supply in our future society. It is therefore important to look at the energy system as a whole. It will be important to make use of residual energies through circular flows and increased industrial symbiosis. It is also important to ensure that the most efficient type of energy for each need is used and that all opportunities for efficiency are taken advantage of. The future needs that the new flexible energy system will meet are difficult to predict. Therefore, there is also a need for inventories, surveys and analyses that can contribute to a greater understanding of which needs must be met in the future.

To contribute to the green transition of the energy system, the Region actively participates in both groups linked to the EU and to innovation and research in fossil-free energy production and hydrogen technology. The Region also contributes by financing various activities and projects and by monitoring and influencing legislation in the area.
