The establishment equation – how northern Sweden succeeds

Through billions of SEK in investments in fossil-free and circular industries, northern Sweden has become the scene of an industrial paradigm shift. Despite short time horizons and enormous establishment requirements, the region has managed to land them one by one in a short time. But what makes establishments choose the region, what expectations are there of a municipality and what can the existing business community do to get the investments to land?

Welcome to a knowledge seminar on how Luleå and the region tackle growth together through cross-sectoral cooperation and geographical co-planning from local to regional. national

The importance of hydrogen for the green transition

Hydrogen is described as the key to a fossil-free energy system. Hear how researchers, companies and public actors work together to solve challenges around production, storage and transport – including a high-pressure pipeline around the Gulf of Bothnia. How important is hydrogen for the climate, major industrial investments, societal transformation and energy supply?

Mining time in Sweden – a mineral policy ranking ahead of this autumn's parliamentary elections

Access to metals and minerals sets the pace for real climate change. Sweden is the EU's largest mining nation, especially northern Sweden, and has great potential to contribute with both increased primary mining and intensified recycling. The Swedish mining industry is also a world leader in a number of areas, fossil-free steel, green copper and extensive electrification. But development is being held back by today's inefficient and unpredictable permit processes.

To find out where our political parties stand in this landscape, Svemin has ranked the parties' mineral policies ahead of this autumn's parliamentary elections. At today's seminar, we will reveal the winner - and the rest of the list.

How we can overcome the threats to the transition

The transformation journey of Swedish industry has begun and in just four years, industrial production of fossil-free sponge iron – the raw material for the fossil-free steel of the future – will be underway in Gällivare. In Luleå, the world's largest innovation park is being built for a circular mining economy that contributes to more robust value chains in a turbulent Europe. By increasing wind power production to Danish or German levels, Sweden can export fossil-free products and take the lead in a global transformation.

But despite great opportunities, a number of major challenges remain. Lack of transmission capacity is sometimes described as a concrete threat to the transition in the north, how bad is it?

Innovative planning for faster power supply

"We ourselves do not own all the parts to succeed in halving the lead time. A prerequisite is that other involved actors, such as electricity network companies, municipalities, regions and authorities, also contribute within their areas of responsibility. A mutual and constructive willingness to resolve conflicting interests is a prerequisite for us to be able to deliver the desired capacity - in Norrland as well as in other parts of Sweden." - Svenska kraftnät on urgent capacity expansion of the power grid.

Welcome to listen to how the public, private and state sectors choose to take on the challenge together through co-planning.

When northern Sweden takes the lead in the global transition and becomes the center of both innovation and green exports, great demands are placed on comprehensive strategic social development. Tens of thousands of people will choose to move to Norrbotten and live their lives there. This will require service, communication, culture and, not least, housing. How will people be able to get to Norrbotten and move around the region in a good way? How do we create an infrastructure that matches the industrial boom in northern Sweden?

Space - abilities and opportunities

Space is of great importance to our life on Earth, for climate, communications, defense and food production to name a few areas. Bank of America states that the global space industry could reach $1,4 trillion by 2030.

In Norrbotten, we have been active in the space field for 60 years, building up world-leading research, education, test beds and offering services across the entire value chain from launching rockets to downloading data.

The seminar will showcase Norrbotten's capabilities and explore the opportunities available to strengthen Norrbotten and Sweden within the growing space industry.

How we survive growing pains

When northern Sweden takes the lead in the global transition and becomes the center for both innovation and green exports, great demands are placed on comprehensive strategic community development. Tens of thousands of people will choose to move to Norrbotten and live their lives there. This will require service, communication, culture and, not least, housing. How do we create community development and real estate investments that match the industrial boom in northern Sweden?

What does the vision for the future hub of the fossil-free transition look like? What goals do the municipalities have and what is the strategy for getting there? Why doesn't the largest industrial investment attract billions in real estate? Where are the results – role models or what can we learn from others?

How the EU's climate package is helping, rather than hindering, the green transition

The EU's climate package Fit for 55 came out last summer with a series of legislative proposals. Can the Swedish forestry industry maintain its competitiveness if the proposals in Fit for 55 become reality?

The EU's climate package Fit for 55 came out last summer with a series of legislative proposals. Several of them involve placing restrictions on forest raw materials. Just over six months later, Russia invaded Ukraine and the world situation changed. Now, among other things, an energy crisis and raw materials crisis are threatening, perhaps even a food crisis. What do we do now? Can the Swedish forestry industry maintain its competitiveness if the proposals in Fit for 55 become reality? Should we really take major renewable energy sources out of the mix in the middle of an energy crisis?

Life between the houses and the role of culture in societal transformation

In northern Sweden there is Arctic light and Arctic darkness, the country's highest mountain and deepest lake, sparsely populated areas and cities and several different cultures. Norrbotten is also the only county in the country that borders two countries. This is where the future lies, where new industrial ventures, investments and the green transition take place. But here there are also challenges in the form of labor, the creation of good living environments and other things that make life worth living.

How can we together create a future in northern Sweden where culture, sustainability and social development go hand in hand?

An attractive Norrbotten – today and in the future

Northern Sweden is growing and developing at a rapid pace. The question is how do we together solve the enormous skills and housing needs that arise? How do we attract new residents while not forgetting the existing ones. What would make more investors, talents and the world's best electricity and digital experts move to the Arctic Circle? How do we make the image of northern Sweden more inclusive and attractive so that more people feel that Norrbotten is the place where I can grow and work.

The skills challenge of the century in northern Sweden

As the transition in northern Sweden begins, we must get highly educated people, not least women, from the rest of the world to choose to move to Norrbotten. And we must create communities that are attractive for them to live in.

Being “hit” by growth – From management to development

The timing, pace and magnitude of the investments taking place in northern Sweden place new demands on the municipality to continue delivering public services but at the same time deliver the conditions for rapid growth.

We have learned a lot in a short time, but we also want to learn from others. Contribute to our move from operation, management and maintenance to development in line with the growth of the total. Luleå Municipality invites community builders, authorities and municipalities to a growth workshop for new relationships and shared knowledge.
