The Develop Norrbotten Conference

A warm welcome to a conference where we raise our sights and see Norrbotten as part of a larger context. Our county is undergoing a major societal transformation, while the world we are a part of is characterized by uncertainty. We are challenged by a long series of circumstances that are beyond our control. How should we relate to them?

11100 A Regional Development Conference 1200X800

The Develop Norrbotten conference is a meeting place for those of you who are in some way involved in developing the county of the future. We will jointly discuss how we can best create a long-term viable Norrbotten.

It will be a lunch-to-lunch conference that promises new knowledge, inspiration and conversations about the future of the county. We will present parallel seminars on both days where we will delve into current regional development issues, such as what young people dream about in the countryside, speeding up housing construction, sustainable food supply and the production of the Christmas calendar Snödrömmar.

The conference will feature several interesting speakers who offer in-depth knowledge and more perspectives. On stage, we invite local and regional key figures to participate in panel discussions with our speakers.

Rikard Eriksson, Professor of Economic Geography at Umeå University
Eriksson leads a research project on societal transformation. “It’s about seeing what we can learn from the transformation that is happening now, linked to skills supply and competition for labor. About how images of Norrland are developed and used. But also about how municipalities and planners work with these issues and try to see what works and what doesn’t.” (Norra Scen, October 2023)

Maria Wetterstrand, Debate
Maria Wetterstrand is undoubtedly one of Sweden's great eye-openers when it comes to green issues. As spokesperson for the Green Party, she worked intensively to improve the conditions for a greener future in Sweden and became one of our most popular and respected politicians. She may have left the spokesperson position in 2011, but her environmental work is just as active today.

Fredrik Segerfeldt, author and debater
Fredrik believes that the entire industrial initiative is ill-conceived, as it will make us less free, less rich and less green. This is especially true because it is politically created. He believes that servitization (or deindustrialization if you like) has made us freer, richer and greener, and that contemporary industrial investment risks halting this development.

Ulrika Knutson, Journalist and author
Knutson is a strong voice in the discussion about democracy. “The digital revolution has both revitalized and shaken democracy. Speed means everything, thought is becoming less and less. The children of freedom of expression are hate speech, threats and lies, where some statements certainly fall within the law, but just as much hurt and make people afraid – and in the long run can be dangerous and lead to violence.” (SKMA newsletter, June 2023)

Niklas Granholm
He is a research leader at the Swedish National Defence Research Institute. He has served at the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence, where he has worked on various aspects of European security issues. Areas of analysis and study include geostrategic developments in the Arctic and transatlantic and European security and defence policy issues.

Eric Ljungren, board member of the Stenbeck Foundation
An entrepreneur with many years of experience in the media industry and a passion for creating engaging stories and user experiences, Eric has served as editor-in-chief and vice president of the newspapers Metro and Shortcut, as head of DN Stockholm, and as global communications and marketing manager at the Norrsken Foundation.

Hanna Stenegren, Timbro
Responsible for climate, environmental and energy issues at the liberal think tank Timbro. "Sweden needs a new toolbox to achieve our environmental and climate commitments. Slow and unpredictable permit processes are a major problem that slows down climate work and damages Swedish competitiveness." (timbro.se September 2023)

Kristina Alsér, Chairwoman of the Kamprad Family Foundation
Kristina is an entrepreneur, business owner and rural resident. One of the foundation's goals is to support projects aimed at entrepreneurship - especially those that promote a vibrant rural area. The foundation, together with the Stenbeck Foundation, finances the Youth Up North project. Kristina believes that in order to cope with the competition for markets and talents and to take advantage of wisdom, innovation and technical expertise, we need to become better at collaborating, trading, collaborating and co-creating.
