Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions and the Baltic Sea Commission

Region Norrbotten is a member of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions – an organization for Europe's peripheral and maritime regions. The organization works to ensure that peripheral coastal regions do not end up in the shadow of the large commercial centers in the heart of Europe.

Since the EU's centre of power is in the middle of Europe, there is a risk that more centrally located regions will be prioritised over areas on the periphery of the EU. The Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions (CPMR) works with knowledge-raising efforts for policies for the balanced development of areas. The most important areas of concern are maritime issues, infrastructure issues and regional development issues.

The CPMR's activities are divided into six geographical commissions:

  • North Sea Commission
  • Baltic Sea Commission
  • Atlantic Arc Commission
  • Balkan and Black Sea Commission
  • Intermediterranean Commission
  • Islands Commission

Baltic Sea Commission

Norrbotten is a member of the Baltic Sea Commission (BSC), the Swedish Baltic Sea Commission.

The Baltic Sea Commission has twenty member regions from five countries around the Baltic Sea. The Commission works to strengthen regions' work for a sustainable society by promoting democracy, exchanges, cooperation and solidarity between coastal areas and islands in the Baltic Sea.

The responsibility and cost of the Baltic Sea Commission's secretariat rotates between the members. A secretary is appointed on behalf of Region Norrbotten and Region Västerbotten. The secretary is located together with the North Sweden European Office in Brussels.
