Assembly of European Regions

Region Norrbotten is a member of the Assembly of European Regions (AER) – a cooperation network of regions in Europe. AER works to strengthen the political role of the regions and increase cooperation between the regions.

The AER is the largest cooperation network in Europe, comprising more than 200 member regions from 35 countries. The AER considers regions to be the cornerstones of European democracy. As regions are closest to citizens, they are also best placed to respond to their needs and wishes, and to find solutions to economic and social problems. The AER therefore provides a forum where regions can cooperate, exchange experiences, share practices and increase their capacity.

Overall goals for AER

  • Increase the importance of the political role of regions in Europe.
  • Promote regional democracy with respect for diversity.
  • Contribute to interregional and cross-border cooperation between regions, in all areas and in the service of the public.
  • Integrate elected regional politicians and civil servants into European politics through training.
  • Develop regional initiatives in favor of cultural diversity.
