Important announcements in the infrastructure plan – but crucial choices remain

Region Norrbotten is concerned about shortcomings in the government's national plan for transport infrastructure 2026–2037 that risk slowing down development in Norrbotten. The risk that the Norrbotten Line will be downgraded or delayed is particularly serious. At the same time, Region Norrbotten welcomes investments in increased capacity on the Ore Line and increased focus on maintenance. These are important steps for Sweden's competitiveness, preparedness and climate transition.

– Infrastructure in northern Sweden is not a regional special interest. It is crucial for Swedish exports, industrial restructuring, total defense and our joint preparedness, says Anders Öberg (S), chairman of the regional board in Region Norrbotten.

Region Norrbotten is concerned that the Norrbotten Line may be downgraded or delayed. Such a development would have major consequences for industry in Norrbotten, transport in northern Sweden and Sweden's long-term resilience.

– The Norrbotten Line is not a regional option. It is a strategic investment for the entire country. It strengthens competitiveness, climate change adaptation and security of supply. Postponing the expansion is increasing the risks, says Janus Brandin, Regional Development Director in Region Norrbotten.

Regarding the Malmbanan railway, Region Norrbotten emphasizes that the proposed measures are important but not sufficient. The Malmbanan railway is still single-track, with low capacity and little opportunity to redirect traffic in the event of disruptions. Therefore, a vulnerability remains for industry, passenger traffic, the tourism industry and socially important transport.

– Reinforcements and new meeting stations do not solve the fundamental problem. Double tracks are required on the Malmbanan Line to create a robust and reliable system with high readiness, says Anders Öberg.

Region Norrbotten calls for clear decisions on when the railway infrastructure should be completed, faster implementation and a holistic perspective. The planning must better reflect the industrial transition and the increased security policy demands placed on the transport system in northern Sweden.

Region Norrbotten will continue the dialogue with the government and the Swedish Transport Administration to ensure that the national plan meets Sweden's needs - now and over time.
