Seven points for the development of northern Sweden – here is the government's strategy

On January 11, 2023, the government announced that it would develop a comprehensive strategy for northern Sweden, to accelerate the industrial green transition. It took almost a year and a half before it was presented this summer, with seven target areas.

Now there is a golden opportunity for northern Sweden to lead the new industrial revolution and become an engine for Europe's green innovations. This is what the government wrote through ministers Ebba Busch (KD), Andreas Carlsson (KD), Elisabeth Svantesson (M) and Johan Pehrson (L) on debate spot in DN on June 27.

The government launched a strategy for northern Sweden in seven target areas. The societal effects of the green transition in northern Sweden are partly taken from Region Norrbotten's reportSomething the government mentioned when the strategy was launched.

– We in Norrbotten and northern Sweden are happy that the government sees the needs and obstacles we have to row this to port, but it would be strange otherwise, considering the enormous contributions to Sverige AB and the entire country that we will lose if this does not succeed, says Anders Öberg (S), chairman of the regional board in Region Norrbotten.

The seven target areas include:

  • a green acceleration office
  • more efficient permit processes
  • a secure energy supply
  • strengthened transport infrastructure
  • more housing and better opportunities for moving in
  • proposals for training and further education to facilitate "the right person in the right place"
  • better conditions for municipalities.

– Now we hope that the increased pace at which the government realizes that this must happen is maintained, otherwise Sweden risks losing the competitive advantages we now have, says Anders Öberg (S).
