Norrbotten Museum closes for renovation

Starting February 1, 2024, the museum building in Luleå city center will close its doors in preparation for an extensive window renovation that is planned to start in May. The renovation is expected to be completed in the spring of 2025, and visitors can then be welcomed back.

The house in Hermelinsparken was built in 1936 as a museum building and is now q-marked (culturally valuable building) by Luleå Municipality. Due to the q-marking, the more than 90 windows will be renovated, instead of being replaced. Funds have been allocated for the renovation project, and the planning is being done in close collaboration with Regionfastigheter, which owns the museum building and shares the commitment to the long-term preservation of cultural heritage.

The museum will close in February to allow for window renovations in May. Accessibility to the windows should be arranged, including dismantling, packing and storing exhibits.

– To reduce moving costs, Norrbotten Museum, together with Regionfastigheter, is investigating the possibility of renovating a few rooms at a time, which are emptied and relocated in an ongoing moving chain, says Margaretha Lindh, County Museum Manager Norrbotten Museum.

– No jobs will be affected by the closure. There will be plenty of work tasks throughout the museum, such as object care in the museum's collections, says Margaretha Lindh.

The museum will also take the opportunity to step up its work in the county and discussions are already underway with representatives in all municipalities.

– During the closed period, we will conduct outreach activities through traveling exhibitions and program activities in collaboration with other actors, in the town and in the county, says Anna Lundgren, head of the Public Department at Norrbotten Museum.

– We will also work on our exhibitions. When we reopen the museum, we will do so with updated existing exhibitions and new external ones, says Anna Lundgren.
Norrbotten Museum will continuously provide information about the renovation work on its social media channels and on its website.
