The North Sweden Green Deal – a new project for the great sustainable societal transformation

The focus of the project The North Sweden Green Deal is on new green industrial investments, but the existing labor market will also be affected to make sustainable societal transformation possible. The project will strengthen the work on sustainable societal transformation in Norrbotten and Västerbotten.

Northern Sweden is at the center of Sweden and the world through the major investments that are now being made to build businesses that support sustainable development in various sectors. These are very large investments in infrastructure, energy supply, skills supply and attractiveness that will be implemented in a short time to create a sustainable future for future generations.

To solve the challenge, the population of northern Sweden needs to increase by 50 to 000 new residents by 100. The challenge will require advanced collaboration on a whole new level. Large and small, simple and difficult interventions need to be implemented in a variety of areas by a variety of different actors with different missions and roles.

– This is an important project so that we can meet the explosive development that Västerbotten and Norrbotten are facing right now. The project means that we can build capacity so that social transformation can take place in a sustainable way, says Rickard Carstedt (S), regional councilor, Region Västerbotten.

The task of the North Sweden Green Deal project is to mobilize and provide conditions for participating municipalities and other partners to jointly realize the major sustainable societal transformation.

– The North Sweden Green Deal has been created so that we can take a holistic approach to the complex challenges that the sustainable societal transition entails. What we are going to do is of a magnitude we have never seen before, but we are also confident in the attitudes of our municipalities and other collaboration partners that we will manage this together, says Nils-Olov Lindfors (c), regional councilor, Norrbotten Region.

The North Sweden Green Deal project is an EU project granted by the Structural Funds Partnership on April 6, 2022 and will run until October 2023. The project has a budget of 112 million, of which 60 of these concern Norrbotten's activities.

The project will contribute to building sustainable societies at regional and local level, realized through the goals of Agenda 2030. The project is implemented in collaboration between Region Norrbotten and Region Västerbotten. The collaboration partners are Norrbotten Municipalities, Luleå University of Technology, Norrbotten County Administrative Board, Swedish Lapland Visitors Board, all municipalities in Norrbotten and their businesses, and Skellefteå Municipality in Västerbotten.
