Launch of Nära mat: Norrbotten's food strategy 2022-2030

Now, Nära Mat, Norrbotten's food strategy that aims towards 2030, is being launched. The food supply in Norrbotten must be secured for the future and there is an increased need for good food from the local area.

The shared vision is “More Norrbotten food on plates”. Work on Norrbotten's food strategy began in 2015, and now a revised regional food strategy is being presented that aims towards 2030. This is being done in collaboration between the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten, Region Norrbotten, Norrbotten's municipalities and LRF Norrbotten.

– To gather strength and ensure the implementation of the strategy, we have joined forces with the county's stakeholders and businesses. We must secure the supply of food and together contribute to the work of sustainable development, says Hulda Wirsén, project manager and coordinator for Nära Mat at the County Administrative Board.

The strategy is aimed at actors throughout the food chain in Norrbotten. The vision and objectives are to be achieved through targeted measures, business development, projects and collaborations between private and public actors. All to develop and stimulate all stages of the food chain - from production to consumption and achieve the vision "More Norrbotten food on plates".

– There is a great deal of commitment from both companies and private and public actors in the county. The fact that consumers are increasingly interested in our sustainable and locally produced food in both the green and blue industries* in Norrbotten is welcomed, as the profitability of companies is an important goal for implementation, especially among primary producers. Profitability is a prerequisite for increased production in both existing and new companies, states Nils-Olov Lindfors, regional councilor.

The food sector has been defined as a socially important activity since 2020, which highlights the ongoing preparedness work in Sweden, where food security is an important piece of the puzzle. Here, public actors have a major responsibility for long-term societal development and preparedness for societal disruptions.

– We have so many competent companies in Norrbotten with fine food. The global situation and the major investments underway in the county also mean that the ability to supply food in our part of the country is becoming an important issue. We must all have access to good food, says County Governor Lotta Finstorp.
