Wanted: New principal for Norrbotten NEO
The Norrbotten NEO ensemble was started in 2007 as a bold venture into contemporary art music. The ensemble's performances are mainly in demand in the country's major cities, not in Norrbotten. Since the tax money that Region Norrbotten spends on culture is intended to benefit the county, it is therefore proposed that the ensemble be given a different principal.
– Over the years, we have tried to find the right forms for Norrbotten NEO, but we are not succeeding. Therefore, we must hand over the assignment to someone else who can create the right conditions for the ensemble, says Tomas Vedestig, chairman of the regional development committee.
Establishing a leading ensemble of the Norrbotten NEO character is a challenge. During the years the ensemble has existed, it has been met with praise, but it has been difficult to have a sustainable touring activity despite the good reputation. With this in mind, it is proposed that the regional development committee decide to:
- 2023 is Norrbotten NEO's final year of operation within the Norrbotten Region.
- Norrbottensmusiken is investigating the ensemble's prospects for a new principal in 2023.
- Norrbottensmusiken will review its direction for a broader mission and a more flexible music offering in and for the county.
– We have prioritized the ensemble both operationally and financially, but despite its 15 years, the ensemble lacks local roots in the county where audience figures in Norrbotten are very low. The tax money we spend on Norrbotten NEO does not provide enough benefit for the people of Norrbotten and therefore we wish that someone else would take over the leadership, says Tomas Vedestig, chairman of the regional development committee.
The Regional Development Committee will meet on November 29.
