Loved the basket!
Mushroom basket, fruit basket, waste basket, shopping basket. The basket as a means of carrying, transporting and storing has a long tradition in Sweden and baskets from other parts of the world are common in our interior design stores.
On June 15, the exhibition "Beloved Basket!" opens at Norrbotten Museum. The exhibition highlights the basket from perspectives such as sustainability, personal creation and history. A large number of baskets, materials and basket techniques from different parts of Sweden are on display, as well as baskets from Norrbotten Museum's collections and local craftsmen. Braided, tied and twisted.
Mushroom basket, fruit basket, wastebasket, shopping basket. The basket as a means of carrying, transporting and storing has a long tradition in Sweden and baskets from other parts of the world are common in our interior design stores. The basket in digital form also has a given place in online stores. However, there are not many basket makers left in Sweden and the knowledge of how to tie and braid baskets is disappearing.
The exhibition "Beloved Basket!" wants to arouse curiosity about the craft, show the diversity of baskets in Sweden and tell about our rich basket tradition around the country. Can we keep the classic basket craft alive? What role can baskets play in the fight against climate change? And can they fulfill a new function in our modern society?
"Beloved Basket!" is a traveling exhibition and part of the project The Basket Lifts. It has been produced by Sörmlands Museum in collaboration with the Skåne Handicrafts Association and the Östergötland County Handicrafts Association.
The exhibition will be on display from June 15th to October 2nd at Norrbotten Museum.
