The Garden of the Midnight Sun – about to bloom
Now the vision of the Midnight Sun Garden is about to become a reality. Region Norrbotten is joining the project with the aim of creating an attractive and unique garden experience that will strengthen Jokkmokk's appeal.
Jokkmokk Municipality has been working to create the Midnight Sun Garden since 2012, with the Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum, which runs the Jokkmokk Mountain Garden, being part of the steering group. In 2021, the Midnight Sun Garden Jokkmokk Fundraising Foundation was formed to lead the work forward.
The goal has always been to create an attractive garden experience where architecture and design link garden and nature, but also show the conditions and opportunities that exist for cultivation in the far north. Now, Region Norrbotten has chosen to join the project as co-financiers with almost three million kronor.
– The in-depth feasibility study includes a nature inventory, the development of a detailed plan and construction design. Marketing material will be produced and work will be carried out at national, regional and local levels to market the project. The work also includes the development of a business plan and a long-term sustainable operating organization. A national reference group that is linked to the project will mainly work to secure financing for the project as a whole and create contacts within research, the tourism industry and business, writes the Regional Development Committee about the implementation of the Midnight Sun Garden project.

Sustainable investments
The project is based on sustainable investments in everything from planning to implementation of nature inventory and construction design. The Midnight Sun Garden is based on a sustainability perspective and green transition, climate change, biodiversity and conditions for cultivation in the north are examples of research that the project wants to initiate. The project is in line with Norrbotten's regional development strategy and will contribute to a high quality of life in attractive living environments and to developing the tourism industry. The goal is to create an attractive garden experience where architecture and design link gardens and nature and which strengthens Jokkmokk's attractiveness as a tourist destination. The current mountain botanical garden in Jokkmokk will be included in the Midnight Sun Garden.
