Will the Malmbanan railway become a stumbling block for social change?

A seminar on accessibility and capacity on the Malmbanan railway

The railway between Luleå and Narvik transports approximately 45 percent of the total amount of freight by rail in Sweden. The Ore Railway is extremely important for industry in northern Norrland, and thus for the whole of Sweden. Sustainable, efficient transport is crucial for the county's competitiveness and attractiveness in a globalised market. The availability of labour and good commuting opportunities mean that the Ore Railway also needs to meet the needs of passenger traffic.

During the coming decade, the importance of the Malmbanan Railway will grow further due to the many industries establishing themselves in northern Sweden.

How can the capacity of the Malmbanan railway be increased to enable businesses to transport their goods? Is there space for both passenger and freight transport on the Malmbanan railway? Since there is no double track on long stretches, the railway network becomes very vulnerable as soon as accidents happen along the way. Many people are reluctant to take the train because it is not reliable. Will freight transport displace passenger traffic?
